JLT Kickstart Workshops
The JLT Kickstart Workshops are a series of events designed to educate pre-teen and teenage girls in the areas of mind and body. Each two-hour workshop is broken into two hour-long segments; one dedicated to emotional well-being and the other demonstrating alternative forms of exercise. This year there will be 4 workshops at St. Alban’s starting in January 2010.
This year JLT Kickstart for Health workshops will expand to Pathways for Children, Youth and Families in York Region. The York Region program started in October 2009 with regular workshops focused on exercise. There are two specific events, “Navy Seals Bootcamp” for the boys and “Girls only Fitness bootcamp” for the girls. These workshops are targeted for the youth at Pathways. Future workshops will include topics on nutrition, shopping on a budget, and emotional well being.
Each year one of the JLT Kickstart for Health focuses on cooking in partnership with the Kids in the Kitchen program done by Junior Leagues around the world.
Past Workshops Include:
I AM STRONG Workshop - This workshop reinforces positive self image through art and self-identified emotional, mental and physical strengths. The activity was followed by an introductory salsa instruction.
Healthy Cooking Workshop - This workshop, presented in partnership with Michelle Wolfson of Chef de Maison, taught the basics of healthy food choices. Participants were given the opportunity to prepare and cook their own healthy meal, and enjoy it at the end! For more information on Michelle or her company, visit www.chefdemaison.ca.
Body Image & Belly Dancing - Discussion about positive body images including "what not to wear". Afterwords, an intense abs workout through Belly Dancing.
Conflict Resolution & Dance - All girls face conflict daily with friends and family. This workshop will discuss healthy ways to deal with everyday problems, followed by a dance lesson.
Kickboxing Sports Workshop - The program will bring in a sports figure to discuss aspects of a healthy lifestyle. The girls will then have a fun cardio kick-boxing workout.
Grocery Trip - The group will visit a local supermarket with a nutritionist and cover topics such as reading nutritional information on labels and making healthy snack choices.
Cooking Class - The group will partner with the "Mom's Workshops" to prepare a healthy Mother's Day meal using recipes from the upcoming JLT Kickstart for Health Cookbook.
