Going Shopping
The Moms from St.Alban's Go to Loblaws
By Lindsey BrodieOn Thursday, February 21, the Nutrition for Moms committee came together for a fun, educational evening with seven mothers from St. Alban’s at the Loblaws on Dupont Street. The group met with Julie Moro, a registered nutritionist from Atrium Nutrition in Barrie, to tour the store and learn more about how to make healthy choices when shopping.
After starting in the fruit and vegetable section, the group proceeded to the other areas of the store, focusing on each of the basic food groups. Everyone in attendance was intrigued with what Julie had to say. She brought attention to the fact that when shopping, we should all focus on whole fresh foods and stay away from a lot of the processed foods that are often quick to prepare but nutritionally dead.
Many of the mothers (and committee members) came away with cooking tricks, learning how to save in the end by buying fresh wholesome foods. At the end of the evening some of the mothers picked up items for their families they wouldn't normally buy – a great indicator of the success of the evening.
Before everyone left, Julie handed out "Healthy Eating Guidelines for Children" and Elena, our resident caterer had done up a goodie bag of low fat muffins and cookies for everyone. We all certainly learned something that evening and had a good laugh!
