2009/10 Program gets Kickstarted !
By Martha GarriockThe 2009/10 JLT Kickstart for Health journey has kickstarted in TWO regions of Toronto – downtown and in York Region. This year we are ecstatic to have launched our Kickstart for Health program with a new parther, Pathways for Children, Youth and Families in York Region. In November, with support from volunteers from the community, the Junior League of Toronto launched two exercise “bootcamps” for the youth that drop into Pathways. The youth are loving the “navy seals training bootcamps” and can’t believe the difference they already see in their health and weight. The program will continue into the new year in addition to workshops on healthy eating, and budget shopping.
The downtown program, in partnership with St. Alban’s boys and girls club in Toronto’s Annex has also expanded their running program. This year we have added a 5km training session in the fall, in addition to the 5km/10km training program in the spring. The 11 girls, armed with new Nike shoes sponsored by the Junior League of Toronto, will complete their first 5km run on December 12th . The Junior League “buddies” and community mentors will be running along side them, encouraging them each step of the way, while getting healthy themselves. We are happy to have Maddie White again this year as our running coach!
The Junior League of Toronto cannot wait to the new year where they will launch workshops across Toronto and in York Region, and start their “stretching” program to identify their next JLT Kickstart for Health community partner.
